A holiday tradition moves to the Opera House and more

BOSTON BALLET

As promised, The Nutcracker will move this winter into the Opera House, around the corner from its old home at the Wang Theatre. And Boston Ballet has announced it will build to suit, which means the company will have newly customized sets, and perhaps a few new tricks, up its sleeves. That’s November 25–December 30 at the Opera House, 539 Washington St, Boston | $25-$110 | 617.931.ARTS.

BOB DYLAN: UNSCRIPTED

In the summer of 1964, Dylan wasn’t yet an icon — at 25 (the same age as Conor Oberst now), he was still just a folksinger who’d only recently released his first full album of original songs. Douglas Gilbert was even younger: 21 and a nervous rookie photographer for Look. The candid shots Gilbert took of Dylan that summer — hanging out with Alan Ginsberg and Terry Southern, watching Dean Martin on TV, batting out lyrics and poetry at a typewriter — are a fresh look at an old subject. The exhibit, a boon to Dylan fanatics, will be accompanied by a 40-page catalogue, a film series, and local bands covering their favorite Dylan tunes. That’s at Allston Skirt Gallery, 450 Harrison Ave, Boston | October 7-29 | 617.482.3652.

MAGDALENA USA

Men may be from Mars, but women are from Venus and everywhere else. This international women’s theater festival was founded in Wales in 1986, and its network spans 50 countries. But this is the first foray stateside for the Magdalena Festival, which makes its US debut in Providence July 30–August 6. During the six days of the festival, which is spread over several venues, there will be experimental performances by female artists from Singapore, Serbia, and Montenegro, Denmark, Australia, Spain, Wales, New York, New Orleans, and Rhode Island, with events to include a Waterplace Park concert by Catalan chanteuse Maria del Mar Bonet and readings of new works by Native American woman writers. A $150 Premier Festival Pass gets you into all 16 performances. There are also six-show passes for $80, three-show passes for $40, and $15 individual tickets, all available through ArtTixRI.com | 401.621.6123.
