Chez Henri’s pressed Cuban sandwich
ˇViva cubano!
BY GENEVIEVE RAJEWSKI

  PREVIOUS COLUMNS

The first time I dined at Chez Henri, I was somewhat disappointed. Sure, the Cuban-French food was artful, the atmosphere romantic. But the menu lacked the tasty pressed sandwich that’s synonymous with Cuban cuisine.

Fortunately, a savvy friend recently clued me in to a Chez Henri secret: the restaurant does offer a cubano — but only at the bar. The pressed Cuban sandwich features thick pieces of pork, thinly sliced ham, diced cornichons (pickled gherkin cucumbers), and Gruyère cheese grilled in buttery French bread. Each half requires two hands to heft — meaning tonight’s dinner can do double duty as tomorrow’s lunch. Served with fried-plantain chips and salsa, it’s just the thing to accompany a mojito when you want to bring a touch of the tropics to a harsh winter night.

Available for $11 at the bar at Chez Henri, 1 Shepard Street, in Cambridge. Call (617) 354-8980.
