Zenith stuffed grape leaves
Bundles of joy
BY TAMARA WIEDER
Previous Columns

We all know that prepared foods can be a nutritional nightmare: full of fat, high in sodium, bursting with carbs and calories. It seems the more convenient something is to eat, the worse it is health-wise.

Not so with Zenith stuffed grape leaves — known in Greece as yalantzi dolmades. They couldn’t be more convenient — 12 of the little leaf-wrapped bundles come snugly packed into a squat pop-top can — yet nutritionally, there’s no reason for guilt. Each dolmade has only two grams of fat and four grams of carbohydrates, and a mere 39 calories. And the ingredient list for these flavorful Greek treats is short and sweet: vine leaves, rice, sunflower oil, onions, salt, pepper, and spices.

Of course, the stuffed grape leaves are so tasty, so full of authentic flavor, you might be tempted to finish off the whole can — in which case it’s back to the nutritional nightmare.

Available for $2.29 for a 13-ounce can at Trader Joe’s stores.
