Pomegranate martinis
One cocktail, shaken, no guilt
BY LYNDA BASSETT
Previous Columns

If you’re really good at rationalization and it just so happens to be cocktail hour, why not get your health benefits with your drink? You can, if you partake in the latest cocktail trend: the pomegranate martini, currently offered at various local bars and restaurants including Union Bar and Grille, Bomboa, and Mantra.

Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants, which can help fight signs of aging and even some diseases. The sweet-tart cocktail is a unique pink-purple color and goes down very smoothly. At Mantra, they call it a "Telotus," says bar manager Paul Yates, because "it’s the lotus flower of martinis." Mantra makes it with vodka, triple sec, pomegranate juice, and just a hint of lime. At Union, it’s the signature drink, made with pomegranate purée. Bomboa uses pomegranate purée in its martinis, margaritas, and just about anything else.

Available for $10 at Union Bar and Grille, 1357 Washington Street, Boston; call (617) 423-0555. Available for $9 at Mantra, 52 Temple Place, Boston; call (617) 542-8111. Available for $10 at Bomboa, 35 Stanhope Street, Boston; call (617) 236-6363.
