VENOM

85 MINUTES | BOSTON COMMON + FRESH POND + SUBURBS

Picture this: a reanimated corpse possessed of superhuman strength slaughters a succession of innocent victims in any number of grotesque ways, simply to excite an audience that’s too young to be exposed to this kind of R-rated bloodletting to begin with. Now, picture it set within the World Trade Center and you’ll get a sense of my experience watching this nihilistic teens-in-peril tripe, which takes place in the Louisiana bayou. Director Jim Gillespie (I Know What You Did Last Summer) sends his fresh-faced cast of victims (Jonathan Jackson, Bijou Phillips) toward all manner of uncreative execution (excepting a death by sandblasting) at the hands of snake-bitten tow-truck driver Ray Sawyer (Rick Cramer). As Venom offers nothing new, you can correctly assume that Ray’s first victim will be a black man (Method Man)and that the lone survivor will be a white girl (Blue Car’s Agnes Bruckner). There, I ruined the ending. Donate your $10 to the Katrina relief effort instead.
