Notes

BY SARAH TOMLINSON
Tracy Down Under

Tracy Bonham’s 1996 hit "Mother Mother" is getting renewed attention thanks to a cover by the Veronicas, an Australian twin-sister duo who cover it on their Capitol debut, The Secret Life of the Veronicas. Bonham is friendly with Veronicas producer Greg Wells, who co-wrote her song "Something Beautiful." She likes the teens’ version, though she thinks they could have tweaked the arrangement more, and says it’s eerie to hear young girls who sound like her singing the words. "If that was my daughter singing, I would want to tell her that everything will be fine, so stop worrying and freaking out."

A new song by Cave In vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky and Eulcid’s Mike Law, who collaborate as NEW IDEA SOCIETY, is an inflamed reaction to the government’s hurricane response. The song, "Equations," is available exclusively via iTunes, and the proceeds benefit the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) to aid Gulf Coast hurricane-relief efforts. "We released this song because of course the citizens of this country have responded with the generosity and compassion that one would expect, and of course the government has acted criminally in its responsibility to literally rescue its citizens," Law writes via e-mail. Meanwhile, Brodsky has contributed three new solo songs, all recorded in his kitchen, to a split EP with Philadelphia’s ROMANA CORDOVA; it’s due December 27 on the Weymouth label Bodies of Water Arts and Crafts . . . Boston hardcore favorites PANIC are regrouping to record an EP of new material this fall with Dean Baltulonis at Atomic Studios in New York City. It will be released early next year by Dutch label Reflections Records, which has also released material by CONVERGE and GIVE UP THE GHOST. Salem’s Bridge Nine label will also re-release the band’s first two EPs on a CD tentatively titled Strength in Solitude: A Brief History of Panic. This all follows a reunion show last March in the Netherlands that caused the members to think, "This is great, we could do more," as frontman Gibby Miller explains over the phone from his new home base, Los Angeles. The band’s line-up includes original members Damian Genuardi (now with the Explosion) and guitarist Azy Relph, former American Nightmare guitarist Brian Masek, and new drummer Q. Look for a show January 28 at MassArt . . . The members of the hard-rocking ’80s girl group LIZZIE BORDEN & THE AXES are, uh, burying the hatchet after years of acrimony. Their reunion Saturday at SkyBar is their first local show with the original line-up since 1988. Expect costumes and old favorites plus their covers of "Stepping Stone" and "Soldier Boy," which used to get local radio play.
