Skating Club singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Aubrey Anderson writes songs with unabashed nostalgia. One whiff of an old girlfriend’s perfume on a stranger (in the melancholy and reflective "Come By or Call") and he can’t help writing a song about it. His Boston-based ensemble have put on some miles and made a few changes since their 2001 homonymous debut, venturing to San Francisco and then relocating to the indie-rock cradle of the South, Athens, before eventually resettling in Boston earlier this year. But no matter where the day takes Anderson, his band’s music remains as rooted in remorse and regret as it is in skeletal guitar chords, slow-moving rhythms, and gentle keyboard embellishments. Add to that mix his vocals, which rarely reach beyond a whisper that can recall Spain’s Josh Haden in its deadpan sweetness (or, when the orchestration gets heavy, orch-pop master Eric Matthews), and even hopeful sentiments that aim for the stars seem destined to mull longingly over familiar ground.
