THE SCENE
Weekend nights at the Westway
BY CAMILLE DODERO

Maybe it’s the trailer-trash connotation, the idea of imbibing an " anti-brand " beer, or the fact that it’s so damn economical, but mussy-haired hipsters sure do love Pabst Blue Ribbon. And so when Carl Lavin, the 32-year-old promoter of the Pill — a Britpop-’60s-mod night that unexpectedly shuttered last September after five years of Fridays at the Upstairs Lounge — considered holding the event at Cambridge’s Westway (formerly Upstairs at the Hideaway), his first demand for the Alewife-area club was that it " order Pabst right now. We’re not even continuing this conversation unless Pabst Blue Ribbon is here within a week. "

Lavin, who’s working alongside the Pill’s DJ Ken, certainly knows his audience. " We’re music fans and clubgoers that know how much Boston clubs can suck, " he says. Since they’re pretty certain that a lot of other folks feel similarly — that Boston suffers from a glut of $4-plus plastic Bud bottles and sky-high covers — Lavin not only organized the Pill for this Friday at the Westway, but also an indie-rock DJ night called " the Plan " (named after both a Built to Spill song and the Washington, DC, band Dismemberment Plan) for Saturday, and " Creation, " an obscure amalgam of British B-side/covers/remixes for Sunday. " Basically I’m hoping to give Bostonians who are sick of getting ripped off at clubs the option to come hear good music that doesn’t really get played anywhere else, and have cheap drinks, " he says.

And the drinks will definitely be cheap. " At first, " Lavin says, " the Westway was like, ‘We’ll charge $2 instead of $1.75 for PBR — we don’t want to deal with the quarters.’ And I was no-no-no! PBR has to be under $2 or there’s no point! "

The Pill, featuring DJs Ken and Jennifer, takes place this Friday, February 14; the Plan takes place on Saturday, February 15; and Creation with WMFO DJ Dave takes place on Sunday, February 16. All events held at the Westway, 20 Concord Lane, in Cambridge. Cover is $5 for 21-plus and $8 for 19-plus on Friday and Saturday; $3 for 19-plus on Sunday. Call (617) 661-8828.
