ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST.
The Pennsylvania company that owns the Nashua Telegraph has
purchased
the Cabinet,
a small, (formerly) independent weekly in Milford, New
Hampshire. Founded in 1802, the Cabinet had been owned
by the same family since 1809. Cabinet Press publishes three other
papers as well, and those have been included in the deal. (Thanks to

Few independent papers survive in the Granite State into the chain newspaper age. Sources tell me the Peterborough Transcript is for sale. Other independent voices include the Keene Sentinel, the Colebrook News and Sentinel, and the NH Gazette in Portsmouth.
Vermont independents include the hard-pressed Rutland Herald and the start-up Vermont Guardian.
