Review: Akon | Freedom

Droppin', poppin', etc.

Back in April 2007, R&B singer and rapper Akon dry-humped a 15-year-old girl on stage, an incident that led to some overblown criticism in the conservative media. For those who haven't YouTubed it, "We Don't Care" recounts the details: it's a track about peeping a dime piece with a "big booty, small waist" and having to "bag her" right there at the club.

Akon has publicly apologized for the incident, but he begs to differ here: after noticing people watching him "droppin' and poppin'," he admits that it makes him want "to keep grinding." Although this moment of catharsis is a highlight, the rest of Freedom is mostly lame club tunes with mega-auto-tuned vocals about wishing "I could just stop by and lay by your side." But that "shawty leanin' " shit rocks during "I'm So Paid," where trapstar extraordinaire Young Jeezy and current Hot Boy Lil Wayne help rain dollar bills because they're "number one hustlas getting' money."

For Akon's sake, let's hope the strippers are 18+.
