Ho, ho, ho!

Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  December 15, 2009

Some haunts are approaching seasonal hibernation time, but local clubs are still kicking out a wealth of shows on the cheap, including a trio of no-cover shows on THURSDAY (the 17th); THE KILLDEVILS plug in at Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290), alt-retro kids FAR OFF PLACE stay close to home with a visit to the Knickerbocker (401.596.4225) in Westerly, and MARK CUTLER entertains the Main Street crowd at the Greenwich Hotel (21+ and never a cover, call 401.884.4200). Headbangers unite for a big one on FRIDAY (the 18th) at Lupo's (401.331.5876), with six bands on the bill led by locals JOINT DAMAGE, THE EMPIRE SHALL FALL, and ACEROSE ($12 at the door). Club Hell hosts a 6 pm show with SOUNDWAVE STICKUP and THESE GREEN EYES opening for THE COMING WEAK, who just released a new disc. Then head upstairs for SHRYNE, FOR THE LOVE OF SLOANE, and JILLIAN STELLAR at Jerky's Bar (401.621.2244). The busy Friday also includes BARNACLE (featuring members of Sharks Come Cruisin') at the Peeptoad Coffeehouse in Foster; there's a full bar on-site, a key component while belting out their beer hall sea shanty tunes, go to FosteringArts.org for tickets. And GROW will host a Christmas party bash at the Knights of Columbus in Lincoln. A home-cooked spread and full bar available, $15 at the door and free for kids under 12, call 401.533.4839 for all the details. Joe Fletcher of WRONG REASONS dropped a line about the debut of his "new four-piece, rock 'n' roll-based lineup" opening for LA's The Willowz at Jerky's on SATURDAY (the 19th). Fletcher is prepping a follow-up to the excellent '07 debut Bury Your Problems. And on WEDNESDAY (the 23rd), Lincoln's STALEMATE host their CD release show at the Blackstone, with friends ROZ RASKIN & THE RICE CAKES and BEAT SURRENDER leading off (401.726.2181).
