He uses the guitar as the basis for composition. “If I’m in front of a piano, there are too many notes, and I try to sound clever. But the guitar makes you play simple and honest.”
The bandleader has made inroads as a promoter, as well, over the past few years. Live at the Theatre documents his opening set for the Charlie Hunter Trio, and he’s also presented the likes of Bill Frisell, James Carter, Jerry Bergonzi, and Billy Martin at the Y. It’s part of a growing DIY jazz scene that he identifies with the likes of Ken Field’s Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, Eric Hofbauer’s Creative Nation Music, and saxophonist Todd Brunel’s Vortex series at Outpost 186. “I’m a big believer in that — let’s do it, let’s put on a show. All we need is a room.”
