The bands you should be listening to this year

Selecting new local acts sure to blow up in the coming year is a fool's errand. And yet, here are our picks of 11 bands you should know in 2011, a host of young outfits ready to take the next step in defining Boston's perpetually indefinable sound. The selection process is an inexact science. Most of the groups listed below have been strumming along for more than a year, but some didn't join the local scene till after May's Aquapocalypse. Newer acts reshaped the scene in 2010 — from Mystery Roar to Bad Rabbits to Bodega Girls — and now there's already another incoming class set to make its mark on the year ahead. And, oh, we excluded everyone who won a Boston Music Award last month, because those folks are already famous.
