10. BRITNEY SPEARS, "HOLD IT AGAINST ME"
I was stoked when rumors started to surface that she was going dubstep — Brit getting hip to '06! Subversive wobbly noises infiltrating the mainstream and freaking out the squares! But, alas, no squares shall be outfroken — most of the dubstep is cordoned off into a little 30-second playpen at the end, so as not to get the rest of the track too grubby. Elsewhere, this is Britney's dumbshittest single since the teen-pop days, as you could probably tell by the title; the verses are a tuneless waste of time, and the chorus rips off a lame, antique pick-up line (and a lame, antique country song, to boot). Woof.

With a semi-sober face I'll claim that hip-hop in 2010 might deliver more than just posthumous Dilla discs, Dipset mixtapes, and a new ignoramus coke rapper whom critics pretend rhymes in triple-entendres.

Maybe it was when saxophonist Kelly Roberge, instrument in hand, leapt off the Cambridge YMCA Theatre stage in the middle of a performance by the Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra and fled the auditorium — as if in extreme gastro-intestinal distress.

Much of the press tumult over Beach House has focused on how the duo’s idiosyncratic musical style folds into a surging wave of like-minded indie artists eschewing rock histrionics for a gentler path to the hearts of music listeners.
