If you're a music fan, over the past few years you've had to wrestle with the moral question of our time: to pay or not to pay.

Not paying is easy. But for fans who believe artists should be compensated, the question gets complicated: pay whom? And how? How much?

That's why Berklee College of Music and the Berkman Center at Harvard Law School are bringing artists, innovators, entrepreneurs, lawyers, policy wonks, and music-biz insiders to their "Rethink Music" conference this week, to look for new ways forward.

Here, we've collected 10 of the conference's best ideas. Some, like the Echo Nest's "Musical Brain," will change how you think about music. Others, like fanatic.fm, are simply new ways to think about old relationships. All aim to invent a future for a business sorely needing one.

The music industry is dead. Long live music.

The Patronism.com concept looks promising. Says you need just over a hundred “patrons” for a musician to earn a living. I wonder if they really can save the music industry?

I really wish that someone had looked at Conquer Entertainment. I noticed that one of the other companies passes 75% of the revenue to the artist. Patronism passes 85%, and with only 104 patrons at the current site average an artist nets over $1000/mo. We're set up like this because I am an artist, built it to serve my own needs, and created the deal I'd want when we turned it into a platform.

Our other strength is that we know the difference between consumers and patrons. We use our expertise to help artists attract and serve the latter, while still being able to sell consumables to the rest of their fanbase.
