What’s the saying? “Like a pig in shit”? That’s the sense you get of Black Puddin’, a pair-up of Milled Pavement Records’ honcho Moshe and labelmate 32french, DJ/producers who don’t mind pushing the envelope just a little bit.
Think a pudding made of “curdled and boiled pig blood, mixed with chunks of pork fat (for texture and juiciness) and spices, then stuffed into a sausage casing” (as one online source describes it) sounds good? Then you’ll probably be into their brief EP, Deeelicious, an instrumental work of short pieces built on off-beats and brooding synths.
These aren’t songs with verses and choruses. Rather, they sort of breathe, inflating and deflating, with various pauses and interjections. Moshe’s signature sampled clips are distorted and slowed down, and used mostly just for song transition, and 32french’s video game sounds show up only in the finishing “Le Visage De Cochon,” at least overtly (Mario gets all the coins).
The combination of their two styles results in clanging industrial sounds and skittering snares (“Swine Flew”), high-up melodies that move through the channels and aren’t quite singalongs (“S.L.O.P.”), and boom bip beats that fall apart before they get to the bip (“Sassage Fingahs”).
It is a dark, goth kind of sound — “filth,” as Moshe calls it — and it’s just fine for wallowing and reveling in feeling miserable. But, you know, you can kind of nod your head to it, too.
