JUST LIKE DON QUIXOTE
(Broken River Records)
These
regular guys who sound like Grant Lee Buffalo after going through the fountain
of youth are a well-kept Boston secret. Their quixotic disc, recorded in
Allston, presents eight songs with unpretentious lyrics and compelling stories
that even your mom could relate to. (No slight intended.)
Nostalgic "Somerville," with the frolicsome sound of an accordion, a
tambourine, and even a "yee-hah," is a Dixie-ish tune about a girl (probably an
ex) named Jessica who stays in town while her love takes off to find himself.
Singer Tony Robert's strong voice sings the refrain, "Every road leads back to
Somerville," without irony -- and none is called for. The guy goes back to
Jessica.
Like much of this album, the title track is driven by mellow guitar strumming,
but it adds a sad saxophone and eerie back-up harmonies -- a moody mind flow of
sounds coloring the story of a modern-day chivalrous guy. Just like Don
Quixote, Mindflow have an ability to bring the stories they image to life.
