**1/2 Die Krupps

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

(Cleopatra)

The German quintet return with a raging assault that incorporates a metallic grind with contemporary industrial sonics and the danceable sensibilities of hard electro-body music. Vocalist Jürgen Engler and synthesist/lyricist Ralf Dörper show a concern for oppression and totalitarianism, and the music matches their alienation and anger with energetic fervor. Die Krupps's use of sequencers injects a strong bass element that when chugging along in evenly rapid eighth or 16th notes is a perfect complement to the vocal drama. Weird samples and effects also fly about the guitar-heavy mix.

"LCD" exemplifies the band at their finest, with the electric six-strings rhythmically churning alongside Engler's bellowing vocals and ironic lyrics. The title track contrasts its powerful crunch with melodic keyboards, shades of dark and light fighting lyrically and musically between the verse and chorus. Heavy grooves, confrontational attitude, and surprising (but uncompromising) accessibility make Odyssey a worthwhile listen.
