KIM RICHEY

(Mercury Nashville)

Richey may be walking wounded, but that guy who left her won't see her tears when they chance to meet in "You'll Never Know." Here's a concept album that's too subtle to call itself one, as this former Bostonian moves from broken heart in the dynamite opener, "Those Words We Said" (which Trisha Yearwood covered), to the dry-eyed strength to love again in the closing "Good."

Richey's strong, ringing voice boasts a roadhouse toughness that Yearwood's lacks. Dark, brooding guitar notes ring to match her vocals. Rock and pop slash their way through Nashville country in the able hands of producer Richard Bennett (Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris). Richey's co-authors include locals Jennifer Kimball (ex-Story) and guitarist Angelo Petraglia of Boston's Face to Face. It's a well-crafted debut CD that affirms the once-doubted genre of "thinking person's country."
