***1/2 Dino Saluzzi/Anthony Cox/David Friedman

RIOS

(Monarch)

Next to the harmonica, with its sighs and cries, there may not be a more pensive-sounding musical instrument than the small Latin American accordion called the bandoneon. Argentine Dino Saluzzi's great skill lies in creating gradations of emotion from his simultaneous manipulations of the button keyboard and pleated bellows. The musical colors produced when the sound of his instrument integrates with Anthony Cox's dark tones on electric or acoustic bass and David Friedman's low-luster marimba or vibraphone provide nine originals (most built on South American folk themes) and the chestnut "My One and Only Love" with an uncanny half-elegiac and half-hopeful glow. A short European tour preceded the recording session and helps explain why Saluzzi and the two American jazzmen, who'd never played together before, are so at ease and communicative.
