**1/2 Tempest

TURN OF THE WHEEL

(Magna Carta)

Led by the warm baritone vocals and multi-instrumentation of Lief Sorbye, this Northern California quintet marry Celtic and Norwegian folk with prog rock, using both traditional and original tunes. The electrified folk of "The Barrow Man" gets a majestic neo-classical synth intro from guest keyboardist Keith Emerson. Such ponderous displays are offset by the band's wide-ranging musicianship: spirited fiddling, animated electric guitar, and Sorbye's deftly played mandolins, harmonica, and bodhrán. (This is available from Magna Carta, 208 East 51st Street, Suite 1820, New York, New York 10022.)
