PET YOUR FRIENDS

(A&M)

Dishwalla were previously best known for contributing the song "It's Going To Take Some Time" to the If I Were a Carpenter tribute album in 1994. On Pet Your Friends, the Santa Barbara-based band combine the harder-edged elements of grunge with the softer sensibilities of pop. The debut is a diverse collection that ranges from hard-rocking, guitar-driven power chords to more-melodic ballads.

The opening track, "Pretty Babies," leads with an infectious bass riff with urgent vocals by J.R. Richards. "Counting Blue Cars" includes the catchy chorus "Tell me all your thoughts on God/I'd really like to meet her." "Give" opens with Carpenter-esque keyboards and Richards swooning "I want to remain a child with you forever." In their heavier moments, Dishwalla may trigger comparisons to Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, but after several listens the band stand alone.
