*** Pennywise

FULL CIRCLE

(Epitaph)

If you thought the era of blitzkrieg punk died an inconsequential death thanks to the major-label refuse of bands like the Offspring and Green Day, think again. Pennywise continue the tradition started by fellow Hermosa Beach residents Black Flag and the Circle Jerks without apology or compromise. On their fourth indie release, this powerhouse quartet continue to churn out hard, fast, angry rock and roll that never abandons melody for decibels.

Which is not to say that their songs aren't some of the most caustic tunes ever to threaten the sound barrier. Guitarist Fletcher Dragee thrashes out blistering hardcore riffs that both leap in your ear and spit in your face. But, outside of Bad Religion, what's the last time you heard a punk lyric like "Millennium is upon us/And still we are denied fruits of public labor" (from "Running Out of Time")? Or the kind of political activism that lurks beneath Jim Lindberg's angst-fueled vocals on "Society"? Add to that a rhythm section steamrolling at breakneck speed (aided by Brian McMackin's drums) and you've got genuine power punk that makes Rancid seem like the Archies.
