More summer sounds
Our readers respond to our critics' seasonal picks
One Night with Blue Note, Vol. 3. How can one not think summer
when listening to Gershwin's "Summertime"? Blakey, Hubbard, and the rest pull
all the punches on this one.
Lyle Lovett, Pontiac (Curb). First heard this in a Mexican
eatery on the Vineyard. Brings back summer each time I hear "If I Had a
Boat."
Steely Dan, Can't Buy a Thrill (MCA). Watching Nixon resigning
and listening to King Richard at the same time. Oh what a summer!
Sonny Rollins, There Will Never Be Another You (Columbia).
Recorded in NYC's Museum of Modern Art Garden in June of '65. Cool breezes,
very cool breezes.
Nils Lofgren, "Cry Tough." August. Misquamicut. Blue Sands Night
Club. Live. Enough said.
