**1/2 Patrick O'Hearn

METAPHOR

(Deep Cave)

Former Zappa, Group 87, and Missing Persons bassist/multi-instrumentalist O'Hearn returns with his eighth solo outing of electronic music that equally skirts the trappings of New Age and ambient, utilizing lush synthetics, resonant bass lines, and exotic percussion. Romance pervades everything the composer touches, and the diverse Metaphor is no exception, whether it be communicated via pretty textural guitar, haunting keyboard atmospheres, or dramatic percussive crescendos. The rhythmless deep electronics of "Images in Stone" slowly create enveloping waves of sound. Also striking is the ambient slow dance of "Patience My Friend." And closer "Faith and Endurance" intelligently juxtaposes the tension of flittering textural guitar and a gradually building percussive rhythm with hopeful keyboard passages, producing an absorbing climax. The second release on O'Hearn's new Deep Cave label, Metaphor features guest appearances by guitarists David Torn and Warren Cuccurullo.
