ALTERED BEATS: ASSASSIN KNOWLEDGES OF THE REMANIPULATED

Only recently has the DJ come into the
foreground of rap and pop as an instrumentalist on a par with, say, guitarists
and vocalists. Producer and musical figurehead Bill Laswell has done his part
in bringing some of these artists to a wider audience with the new Altered
Beats compilation. Mixing Laswell's own productions with some of the best
cut & scratch mixers in the world, Altered Beats brings turntable
skills and ambient funk together in a surprisingly effective harmony,
highlighting such DJs as DXT, Rob Swift, Q Bert, and DJ Krush. Tracks range
from above average to absolutely mind-boggling, but the release as a whole
bodes well for a resurrection of DJ recognition worldwide.
