TIERRA GITANA

(Nonesuch)

Fans won't be disappointed with the latest release from this loud Catalan acoustic-guitar troupe, their first since 1993's Love and Liberté. "Pajarito" and "A Ti a Ti" exemplify the band at their best: the rough, tuneful, shouting vocals of Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo, and those pounding guitars. The album is graced with hand-clapping singles ("Igual Se Entonces," "Campesino") and wistfully romantic ballads ("Mi Corazón," "Mujer"). Nicolas Reyes's lead vocal soars with the mournful flute (by guest artist Nasredine Dalil) in "Siempre Acaba Tu Vida." Fine-textured instrumentals feature mandolin, electric guitar, and darbouka.

Whereas most of the tracks are adventurous, "A Tu Vera" and "La Rumba de Nicolas" are characteristic of previous singles "Bamboleo" and "Djobi Djoba." But the Kings' sensual combination of Spanish, North African, and French music remains incomparable.
