*** Rahsaan Roland Kirk
I, EYE, AYE
(Rhino/Atlantic Jazz)
Never given
to understatement or "good taste," the late jazz multi-instrumentalist Kirk
allowed himself to experiment with the far reaches of sound most expressively
in live settings. This previously unreleased concert from the 1972 Montreux
Jazz Festival offers all the pleasures and pains of such an approach. "Blue Rol
No. 2" is a spirited gutbucket blues, imperfect only because it goes on too
long. "Satin Doll" is kind of campy. "Volunteered Slavery" sounded better in
the studio version. Quibbles aside, this recording has a bubbly vitality that
makes it endearing. Newcomers to Kirk are advised to start with Rip, Rig and
Panic (EmArcy), his zenith, but this disc won't disappoint anyone seeking
an unlikely blend of avant-garde musical theater and a jazz recasting of
vaudeville.
