Saxophonist Frank Lowe says he founded this group (a saxophone quartet plus drums) several years ago primarily to play with the young James Carter. On their second album, the band have grown beyond their initial jam-session looseness without sacrificing fire and unpredictability. Founding members Lowe, Carter, and Michael Marcus are joined by newcomer Cassius Richmond and drummer Cindy Blackman (who replaces the late Phillip Wilson), plus saxes Alex Harding and Bobby LaVell on several tracks. *** Saxemble

Most of the material is a funky mix of Memphis soul and new music that traces a family tree from the Hank Crawford hit "Hard Times" through "Monk's Mood" to Albert Ayler's "Ghosts." Carter rips it up on "Hard Times" and carries on an exciting sparing bout with Lowe on "In Walked J.C." It's especially good to hear Lowe's flinty blend of earthiness and transcendence on "Lowe Down and Blue." But it's Marcus, the principal arranger and rhythmic anchor, who is the album's hero. His arranging brings out the best from ensemble and soloists, and his tuba-like bass-saxophone lines contribute to a distinctive sense of rhythm. This is a memorable showcase for some of jazz's most under-recognized voices.
