This Philadelphia-based flutist/composer has an unusually warm and full-bodied tone on his instrument, suggesting Hubert Laws as an inspiration. Among a like-minded group of Philly mainstreamers, Adler performs six originals and four standards (including a wicked version of Monk's " 'Round Midnight."). His compositional skills are not as impressive as his talents as a flutist, and there's a bit too much showy grandstanding for my taste, but the beauty of his tone (an impressive achievement when you realize how thoughtfully he improvises on piccolo and alto flute) marks him as a talent to watch. **1/2 Marc Adler
