**** Joel Rubin with the Epstein Brothers Orchestra

ZEYDES UN EYNIKLEKH

(Wergo)

Forget Mendelssohn if you're looking for the ultimate disc of joyful wedding music. This selection of klezmer celebrates Jewish wedding instrumentals, and even if you're not Jewish, there's enough of a gypsy and/or Greek influence here to make you feel at home. Clarinettist Rubin has assembled numbers made famous by the legendary clarinettist Dave Tarras. Rubin may just outshine his master on these 16 romps supported by the Epsteins (who are in their 70s and 80s, and sound half their age) on clarinet, trumpet, and drums. The generational mix, the careful choice of repertoire, and Rubin's fluid tone and outrageous assortment of decorative phrases contribute to making this one of the most dashing recordings of Jewish music in recent years. It's hot dance music: peppy, jazzy humorous.
