**1/2 Pigface

FEELS LIKE HEAVEN . . . SOUNDS LIKE SHIT

(Invisible)

Pigface are the ever-mutating horde of musicians rounded up by drummers Martin Atkins (PiL, Ministry, Killing Joke) and Bill Rieflin (Ministry, Revolting Cocks). This outing is a remix/rehash of last year's great Notes from Thee Underground, which was cranky, loopy (wit- and tape-wise), and at times downright tuneful. The disc was funny and propulsive, with neo-Marc Bolan pop ("Divebomber"), graceful melancholy ("Chikasaw"), and sitar-fed entrancement ("Empathy"). In place of early Pigface anarchy and improvisation the ensemble spat out actual songs with actual melodies.

Those songs -- and nearly all of Notes -- show up on Feels like Heaven. But the accessibility level must've been too much for the Pigface wisenheimers not to screw around with. Even the Pigface manifesto, "Fuck It Up," gets a makeover. Now the targets are, among other things, small towns, Bongwater, and public transportation. The huge percolating beat and self-mockery are gone; instead we get a comparatively gentle throb, but a more generous dollop of that famous Pigface surliness. It's a trade-off that leaves the ensemble sounding a lot like the early days, when self-indulgence often nearly outweighed listenability. Try again, Pigface; give birth to something new.
