**1/2 Leo Kottke

LIVE

(On the Spot)

Here's the influential (on acoustic guitarists and singer-songwriters) Kottke, à la carte, recorded live at Boulder's venerable Fox Theater last April. The performance drags butt in spots, and except for his humorous monologues, Kottke makes sparing use of his minimalist, monotone voice -- sort of a Wyoming Lou Reed with the reclusiveness of Merle Haggard -- in order to concentrate on instrumentals.

The likes of "William Powell" and "Airproofing" can be too herky-jerky and dissonant for their own good. Kottke does save the day every so often, smoothing out the roughness with a blend of treble notes. Nine of the 13 compositions are original, typical Kottke: instrumentally complex speedballs that leave the untrained ear behind. But Kottke is a self-styled original, and no matter how inaccessible his work, how idiosyncratic his sense of humor, he won't go out of style.

(Leo Kottke plays the Somerville Theatre with Maura O'Connell next Sunday, December 10.)
