*** Patato, Changuito y Orestes

RITMO Y CANDELA

(Redwood)

An intergenerational trio of Afro-Cuban percussionists team up with members of San Francisco's vital Latin music community for one of 1995's most celebratory releases. Cuban-born conga player Patato Valdes was an important member of the '50s mambo and Latin jazz scene in New York. Timbalero Orestes Vilató is a longtime veteran of the New York salsa scene; drummer José Luis "Changuito" Quintana, a co-founder of Cuba's greatest contemporary dance band, Los Van Ván, is inventor of the Afro-Cuban-funk fusion beat called songo.

Changuito's irresistible blend of traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms with James Brown funk dominates many of the tracks, such as "Descarga en Faux," but Patato's relaxed, lyrical congas make their presence felt, as do Vilató's quicksilver timbales. Pianist Rebeca Mauleón combines compelling montuno vamps with complex jazz harmonies. Although this band know their roots, it's when they reach across old boundaries that the music soars. Yoruba vocal chants float over a driving comparsa beat during Mauleón's solo on "Desde el Fondo del Río." Saxophones substitute for voices on the sacred song dedicated to the santería god Ogun. And "Calipso en las Nubes" is a heady mix of calypso, plena, and charenga. Latin music's past, present, and future all meet here.
