MUDHENS
(self-released)
This debut album from the Mudhens, a
mostly engaging mix of soft rock, folk, and country, has the potential to find
a spot on AAA playlists. None of the songs is particularly poignant, and none
really sticks, but they are pretty and pleasant. The disc has an air of
simplicity without insulting your intelligence.
Carla Ryder is an expressive singer, somewhat reminiscent of Natalie Merchant
or Dolores O'Riordan, but without any of the annoying overemoting of which
those two are frequently guilty. At times, the Mudhens slip into mid-tempo
complacency; it's when they stray from standard form that they shine. The
lively "Mercy," with its almost ska-like rhythm, is very effective, as is the
subtle, buoyant opening track, "This San Juan." But the real reward comes with
the unlisted "I Hate My Life." Complete with drum loop and effects-laden
vocals, this song could easily work its way into Ruby's set list. It's an
avenue the Mudhens should consider further exploring.
