  • Where I come from in New Jersey, the breakfast sandwich (on a roll, not on a bagel or muffin) is a holy meal capable of restoring energy and absorbing coffee in one fell chew. For years I've searched Boston for a decent specimen, and the only place I'll honestly say I feel good indulging in this morning sacrament is at Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe in the South End. This lovable greasy spoon serves a $4.80 combo of gooey cheese, crispy bacon, and luscious eggs on a bulkie roll that makes me remember my roots. Word to the wisdom-seeking: ask for two eggs instead of one.

Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe is located at 429 Columbus Avenue, in the South End. Call (617) 536-7669.
