Sweet and sour

Carberry's fruit-sourdough bread

Just as there are rock groupies, so are there bread groupies. Carberry's fruit-sourdough bread, for example, has attracted quite a following. Bakers begin with a 45-year-old starter (from San Francisco), and then add wheat germ, white and whole-wheat flour, raisins, dates, apricots, figs, and sour cherries. The round loaf weighs in at about 20 ounces and costs $3.95 at Carberry's Bakery and Coffee House, located at 187 Elm Street, in Somerville's Davis Square, and 74 Prospect Street, in Cambridge's Central Square.
