Dough-not

The UnHoley Bagel

by Theresa Regli

A couple of years ago, Larry Baras became frustrated with the plastic fork and squeeze-packet cream cheese that come with doughnut-shop bagels. So he decided to construct a bagel with the cream cheese already inside. The result: the UnHoley Bagel, which, quite frankly, is not exactly a bagel -- it's more like a dinner roll with crispy crust and cream-cheese filling. But the misnomer doesn't prevent the UnHoley Bagel from being, as one Phoenix staffer put it, "one of the cooler food inventions of the 20th century." We recommend popping UnHoleys in the toaster oven rather than microwaving them, which induces mushiness. One UnHoley Bagel costs between 40 cents and $1 at most convenience stores and supermarkets.
