Tangelos
The good, the bad, and the Ugli
Noshing & Sipping by Theresa Regli
Strolling through the supermarket the other day, I couldn't help but feel
sympathy for an unattractive, scaly green fruit that caught my eye. Stuck to it
was a sticker that said, "Hi! I am an UGLI tangelo! So sweet and juicy!" I
bought one, and I've since discovered that "Ugli fruit" is what Cabel Hall
Citrus Ltd. calls the variety of tangelo the company imports from Jamaica. The
sweet-tart tangelo is a cross between a tangerine and a pomelo, the latter of
which is thought to be an ancestor of the grapefruit. Buy a few for about 50 to
75 cents each at any supermarket with a good produce selection, and then make
some of the recipes at http://www.ugli.com/ --
including Ugli duckling, which
is much like the classic duck à l'orange.
