Three stars

The Muse

(USA)

Albert Brooks directs and stars in this story of a blocked Hollywood screenwriter who buys himself a muse (a girlishly adept Sharon Stone), only to have her move in with him and his wife (Andie MacDowell), and their two kids. Forget wifely jealousy -- the girls have lunch and go shopping, as Brooks slyly turns his seeming male-chauvinist premise into a fable of gender roles, personal fulfillment, and the nature of chance, personal responsibility, and genius.
