Superman

(1978; screens Friday at 4:30 p.m.)

For what was at the time the most expensive movie ever made ($50 million or so), you don't get much: the special effects in the flight and disaster sequences land with a thud. And it's unsettling to see the now tragically paralyzed Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. But Margot Kidder invests Lois Lane with the spunky sex appeal of a Jean Arthur-like career woman, and the film's comic-book infectiousness still makes it a lot of fun.
