The Public Enemy

(1931; screens Monday at 8 p.m.)

The Public Enemy The woefully underrated William Wellman made this early, influential gangster picture, which stars Jimmy Cagney (in the sly, tough, magnetic performance that made him a star), Edward Woods, Jean Harlow, Joan Blondell, Beryl Mercer, Donald Cook, and, on the receiving end of the most celebrated grapefruit in movie history, Mae Clarke.
