Jerusalem

(Fox Lorber)

Adapting Selma Lagerlöf's novel about a beautiful villager in turn-of-the-century Sweden who leaves her childhood sweetheart to follow a Babbitt-like preacher to Jerusalem, director Bille August produces nearly three incoherent hours of angst-filled posturing, but there she gets a radiant performance from Maria Bonnevie as our radiant heroine, the Carl Dreyer-esque Gertrud.
