The Avengers

(Warner)

As John Steed and Emma Peel, Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman are no match for Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg (the heroes of the '60s TV version). Not that anything would help the film's f/x-addled excuse for a plot, which has Sean Connery as a deranged scientist blackmailing the world by controlling the weather. Far from improving on the original, The Avengers makes a travesty of it.
