Rushmore

(Buena Vista)

Threatened with public school, not-so-stellar Rushmore student Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) forms one bond with a Rushmore benefactor (Bill Murray) and another with a widowed first-grade teacher (a sweetly sad, blushing Olivia Williams). The film's logic is reflected in Wes Anderson's blithe, rigorous layering of each frame in a mise-en-scène reminiscent of Jean Renoir and the Naked Gun people, and in its off-kilter '60s soundtrack and playful, theatrical self-reflexivity.
