The Thin Red Line

Terrence Malick's fitfully brilliant adaptation of James Jones's sprawling novel of the Battle of Guadalcanal marks a frustrating return to the screen. Malick's goal is no less than to determine the nature of good and evil, the secret of life and death; but in that endeavor his all-star cast seem more allegories than flesh-and-blood figures.
