The Mummy
(Universal)
Ostensibly a remake of the 1932 original
with Boris Karloff, Stephen Somers's eye-candy cornucopia bears scant
resemblance to its sedate, chilling predecessor. Brendan Fraser is a 1924
Indiana Jones-styled adventurer seeking the lost treasure of Hatumnaptra; he
teams up with clumsy-but-comely British librarian Rachel Weisz, but when she
unwittingly reads aloud from the Book of the Dead, she regenerates Imhotep and
looses the Ten Plagues of Egypt. The special effects and cinematography are
grand and magical, but mummies and daddies be warned: this is probably too
gross for the kids.
