Many happy returns
Melissa Etheridge puts on a happy face, Dinosaur Jr. may not be extinct, and more

Lady Luck

Two years after writing the Great American Lesbian Break-Up Album — 2001’s Skin — Melissa Etheridge has returned with a new lease on love. She’s got a new, younger girlfriend, a helping hand from producer/songwriter John Shanks (who put the sizzle in Michelle Branch’s "Are You Happy Now?"), and an album, Lucky (Island), that shows she’s ready and willing to put both to good use. On the heels of the disc’s release two weeks ago, she’s announced a tour that’ll have her fans feeling lucky too — forgoing theaters, she’s booked a club tour that’ll bring her to Avalon, 15 Lansdowne Street in Boston, for three nights, April 23 through 25. Lucky, that is, if you’re willing to front $75.25 for a ticket, which you can get beginning Saturday at 10 a.m.; call (617) 423-NEXT.

Social distortion

In the run-up to the Democratic National Convention, Boston liberal/progressive activists and politicos (including city councilors Felix Arroyo and Chuck Turner and radical celebs Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky) are pooling their voices for a think-tankish weekend called the Boston Social Forum, which takes place July 23 through 25 at UMass-Boston. But they’ll begin spreading the word on April 4 with a fundraiser for the conference at the Middle East, 480 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square; the line-up includes screed by Chomsky, shock by Michelle Shocked, invective by punks the Reagan Babies, and multiculturalism from Rumba Cuatro. It’s 18-plus and $10; call (617) 864-EAST.

Meet the Einsteins

If you’re looking for suspense, you won’t find much in Albert Einstein’s high-school report card: as you’d expect, he received a 6 (out of 6) in physics. Got only a 3 in French, though. Einstein’s marks, his Nobel Prize, and original pages from his 1916 general theory of relativity are among the documents adorning what the Museum of Science is calling "the most comprehensive exhibit ever presented on the life and theories of one of the greatest scientists of all time." Organized by the American Museum of Natural History, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, "Einstein" makes one of only four worldwide stops at the museum beginning March 13 and running through June 6; call (617) 723-2500.

Sebadoh + Mascis = ?

The Pixies are headed for Coachella, and there’s a new Mission of Burma disc due in the spring (see "Arts News"). But is another legendary Massachusetts indie-rock band’s reunion in the cards? This week, Sonic Youth announced a spring tour to test-drive material from their summer-’04 follow-up to 2002’s Murray Street. Most of the dates are in Texas; SY will, however, make a one-off stop in their home town of Northampton on April 30. The proceeds benefit community resources for people with autism. But it’s the undercard that got our attention: with performances by J Mascis as well as by Lou Barlow’s long-inactive Sebadoh, the gig offers an unstated yet tantalizing possibility for fans of the old, acrimoniously disbanded Mascis-Barlow version of Dinosaur Jr. (whose catalogue is, as it happens, being prepared for reissue). The show is at John M. Greene Hall at Smith College; tickets are available through Northampton’s Turn It Up! (413-582-1885) and Easthampton’s Night Owl Records (413-527-2444).
