Stand up and shout
Puppetry of the Penis sings it loud and proud, plus a Harry Potter party and more

PUPPETRY OF THE PENIS Nothing can top the inaugural run, when then-Phoenix staffer Chris Wright dropped trou on stage. But take our word: we've never had so much fun watching ugly, middle-aged guys tie their cocks in knots. Beginning July 12, practitioners of "the ancient Australian art of genital origami" return to Boston to twist, bend, and yank their scrotal matter into such "installations" as the Pelican, the Windsurfer, and the Hamburger. The Lyric Stage is unbooked for the summer, so the Penis wranglers are dropping in for an open-ended run, the length of which will depend on how many people still wish to salute the organ. Lyric Stage, 140 Clarendon St, Boston | 617.931.ARTS

MASSBIKE SOCIAL For 27 years, MassBike has been encouraging commuters to leave their cars home and bike to work, then making it safer and easier to do so. On July 7, MB is encouraging you to leave your car at home and maybe take the Silver Line to the Harpoon Brewery — nobody wants to see you drink and bike. And with free Harpoon on tap, as well as goodies from Jamaica Plain’s Blue Frog Bakery, you could end up having more than a few at this fundraiser/party to benefit MassBike’s advocacy efforts. Harpoon Brewery, 306 Northern Ave, Boston | 5:30-7:30 pm | $5-$10 donation | massbike.org

HARVARD SQUARE HARRY POTTER PARTY Make that Hogwarts Square, at least for the evening of July 15, as the Charles Hotel and the Harvard Coop give in to Pottermania. There’ll be a screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in the Charles’s lower courtyard beginning at 8, after which Muggles can make their way to the Coop for a party featuring trivia, games, and, at the stroke of midnight, the opportunity to get their mitts on a copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. RSVP required for the screening | 1 Bennett Street and 1400 Mass Ave, Cambridge | 617.661.5103

WE JAM ECONO: THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN Three regular guys, one insanely irregular punk band. If you know Mike Watt only as that guy who almost died from an ass boil, or that guy who plays in the Stooges now, or that Ball-Hog or Tugboat? guy, this documentary — packed with footage from the old days, before singer D. Boon died, and new interviews about the finest band ever to come out of San Pedro — will learn you. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline | opens July 8 | 617.734.2501

8 TRACK: THE SOUNDS OF THE ’70s For when reruns of That ’70s Show aren’t cheesy enough: Stoneham Theatre pimps out a 50-song revue of the decade’s most recyclable Top 40 hits, from the Doobies to the Bee Gees. Sort of like a cover band relieved of the obligation to make you dance. Stoneham Theatre, 395 Main St, Stoneham | July 7-24 | $18 to $36 | 781.279.2200
