Get a Life
Plus Salman Rushdie and Jerry Lewis

SALMAN RUSHDIE

The novelist behind The Satanic Verses comes to Tufts for a lecture, "Step Across This Line: An Evening with Salman Rushdie," along with a Q&A and signing of his latest book, Shalimar the Clown. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance | Cohen Auditorium, Talbot Ave, Medford | September 27 | 7:30 pm | 617.627.2000.

PHOTOGRAPHIC RESOURCE CENTER BENEFIT AUCTION

The PRC’s annual fundraiser puts nearly 250 images on the block — including works by Robert Capa, Duance Michals, and Olivia Parker — next month at Boston University’s 808 Gallery. (You can scope out the images until then at the PRC, 832 Comm Ave, Boston.) | 808 Comm Ave Boston | October 28 | 6:30 pm | Auction tickets $50 | 617.975.0600.

JERRY LEWIS

It may be one of the great show-biz stories ever told. Lewis, semi-retired from the annual telethon that’s become his last legacy, publishes his official memoir, Dean and Me: A Love Story (Doubleday), on October 25. A few days later, he’ll submit to a live-on-stage interview, Q&A, and book signing at the Boston University School of Management, 595 Comm Ave, Boston | October 28 | 7 pm | 617.267.8484.

CHRIS ELLIOTT

Gifted with a natural physical advantage over his peers — he resembles a rubber chicken — Elliott is widely regarded as one of the comedic giants of his day. His debut novel, The Shroud of the Thwacker (Miramax), has been described as the Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy of period murder mysteries. The Coolidge Corner Theatre wouldn’t consent to host a reading from it without also screening Elliott’s cult classic film Cabin Boy, so he’ll read, introduce the film, and sign autographs at the Coolidge, 290 Harvard St, Brookline | October 12 | 7 pm | $5 | 617.734.2500.
